The Department of Botany started its journey in the year 1999 with Botany as a General subject. Later the Honours stream was introduced in the year 2006-07. The UG course curriculum for Botany Honours is structured by WBSU in an interdisciplinary manner. It contains major sections on different types of plants and their life cycles; also, Pathology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Cytology, Genetics, Plant Breeding, Biotechnology, Taxonomy, Ecology etc. constitute the curriculum.
Student seminar is organized each year and students are encouraged to publish papers in Departmental journal. Wall magazines are also prepared. Educational tours are arranged and report writing as part of curriculum in addition is encouraged. Visit to Botanical Garden and CNH with the students of Botany Hons. And General is a regular practice. Special lectures by subject experts are regularly organized.
In association with NSS unit Plantation program was undertaken within the college campus. The Department of Botany each year organizes a Departmental Day, where the students of the previous year are invited to share their experiences with the juniors.
Recently, an experimental plant medicinal garden is established as a part of a research project, the aim is to spread awareness among the stakeholders as well as within the community about the importance of medicinal plants. Waste management by phyto-remediation is also done at the College as a part of another project by the Dept.
Infrastructure: ICT enabled modern class rooms and well equipped laboratories, seminar library, well arranged Herbarium Specimens and other advance learning facilities are available for better learning experience.
