CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

National Service Scheme (NSS)

The National Service Scheme is one of the best service programmes initiated by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development, Govt. of India for student community in Social Services under the guidance and leadership of social workers. The National Service Scheme was launched by the Govt. of India just after independence embraces variety of colourful activities meant for the student community in particular and for the upliftment of the society in general. As a result both the student community and the society as a whole are highly benefited.

The overall aim of National Service Scheme is to give an extension dimension to the higher education system and orient the student youth to community service while they are studying in educational institution. The cardinal principle of the NSS programme is that it is organized by the students themselves, and both students and teachers through their combined participation in community service, get a sense of involvement in the tasks of nation-building. NSS Students have to understand the community in which they work and recognize themselves in relation to their community. They have to utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems. NSS volunteers have to acquire leadership qualities and a democratic attitude to develop the capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and practice national integration and social harmony. Service to mankind in society is a concept from time immemorial. People cooperate and help each other in one or the other way in their day-to-day life. The motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme is: ‘NOT ME BUT YOU’. This reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other person’s point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human beings. It underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society as a whole.
