About Department

This Department was established in the year 1999 with the introduction of Botany as a General subject affiliated under University of Calcutta. The Botany Honours stream was introduced in the academic year 2006-07. The current UG course curriculum for Botany Honours is structured by West Bengal State University in an interdisciplinary manner. It contains major sections on different types of plants and their life cycles; also, Pathology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Cytology, Genetics, Plant Breeding, Biotechnology, Taxonomy, Ecology etc. constitute the curriculum. At present the department has six sincere, dedicated faculty members for whom academic interest of the students is of paramount significance. To generate an all-round progress and over all personality development of students is priority.

For better learning experience, ICT enabled modern classrooms, equipped modern laboratories with sophisticated instruments, seminar library with abundant good books, well arranged Herbarium specimens, a small museum having a collection of various botanical specimens and other advance learning facilities are available.

The Department organizes Student seminar every year and students are urged to publish papers in Departmental journalWall magazines and various posters are also published regularly. The department organizes frequent local as well as national excursions to have a comprehensive idea on the floristic composition and biodiversity of different regions of India. Report writing as a part of curriculum in addition is also encouraged. Visits to Botanical Garden and CNH with the students of Botany Hons. and General is a regular practice.  Special lectures by subject experts are regularly organized. Plantation programs are undertaken within the college campus. The Department of Botany yearly celebrates Departmental Day, where the students of the previous year are invited to share their experiences with the juniors.

An experimental medicinal plant garden was established as a part of College funded research project, the aim is to spread awareness among the stakeholders as well as within the community about the importance of medicinal plants.

The global pandemic changed the world. Every human being in this planet suffered the consequences of the lockdown. However, the Department of Botany continued its academic ventures through regular online classes to ensure that students continue to receive quality education during these unfavourable conditions. The faculties along with the students upskilled themselves. For effectively utilising this adverse period, they participated in various International, National and State Level workshops, conferences, webinars, awareness programmes and special lectures.The students are mentored and inspired to participate in virtual internship programs.

The students are also, encouraged by the faculties to take part in various extra-/ co-curricular activities. Many cultivated a variety of hobbies for their physical as well as mental wellbeing.
