About College

Hiralal Mazumdar Memorial College for Women, an institution dedicated for empowerment of women, was founded by Biswarup Sevashram Trust  in 1959, with the primary objective of providing University Education in a congenial atmosphere for deserving students irrespective of religion, caste and creed.

It started functioning on 10th day of August, 1959 with just few students on the rolls in the undergraduate general courses of Bengali, English, Economics, History, Sanskrit, Political Science and Philosophy.

Today, there are 1326 students on roll in odd semester studying in 27 U.G courses, out of which 18 U.G courses are taught as major(Honours) courses, three streams (Arts, Sciences and Commerce) and 21 Programmes. The College is now offering 36 special certificate/Add-on/Value added Courses to prepare students for global job market. NCC,NSS activities are there to involve the students to work for the society.

  At present, 111 teaching staff members out of which 30 hold doctoral degree. There are 26 non-teaching staff in service.

Hiralal Mazumdar Memorial College for Women received full statutory recognition in 2001 by Government of West Bengal and came out of the control of Trust rule. The College was initially affiliated to University of Calcutta; since 2008 the College affiliation had been shifted to West Bengal State University, Barasat.   Though affiliated, the College leaves no stone unturned  to frame its own course of action for academic upgradation and adopt innovative methods of teaching and evaluation.

UGC conferred the 2f and 12B status to the College in due course and the College is constantly trying to follow the path of excellence.

NAAC's re-accreditation (3rd Cycle) with A+, which is a steep elevation from its previous status B+ and since then the prime moto of the College is to work harder to help the students evolve into competent, committed, creative and compassionate women with a bright future for their own and for the nation. 

College Research Development Cell, Incubation centre, Institutional Innovation Council, Equal Opportunity Cell are trying their best to transform the College into a vibrant knowledge hub.
